BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference has named Bryant Welbourne Assistant Director of SECU, the league’s academic initiative, it was announced Wednesday by Commissioner Mike Slive.
Under its SECU banner, the Southeastern Conference sponsors, supports and promotes collaborative higher education programs and activities involving administrators, faculty and students at its fourteen member universities.
Welbourne will be involved in all facets of SECU, including primary responsibility for developing and implementing its communications and social media agendas. He will also manage the SECU’s web presence while overseeing various programs and events.
“We are pleased Bryant will be joining the Southeastern Conference staff to support SECU,” Slive said. “His background and skills will enable us to continue to grow our unique academic initiative.”

He also provided on-site support for several rowing competitions.
“I am very grateful for and excited about this wonderful opportunity with the SEC’s academic initiative,” Welbourne said. “I have a full appreciation of the tradition and impact of the SEC and it is an honor to be able to contribute to the future success of the league.”
Prior to joining the Boathouse Foundation, Welbourne was a public relations intern at McNeely Pigott & Fox in Nashville, Tennessee. The University of Alabama graduate earned his B.A. in communication and information sciences with a concentration in public relations.
Welbourne will begin his new role with the Southeastern Conference in August.
