Dr. Douglas Martin Wins SEC Faculty Achievement Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dr. Douglas Martin, Professor of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named winner of the 2020 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for Auburn University, the SEC announced Thursday, April 2.
Dr. Martin has 25 years of experience developing therapies for fatal neurologic disorders such as Tay-Sachs, Sandhoff and GM1 gangliosidosis. His research has garnered more than $7 million in extramural funding and more than $3.8M in licensing fees to Auburn. He has mentored students at every level, and his contributions have been recognized by the National Institutes of Health, which currently supports his research.
“Through his commitment to pioneering discovery and saving lives, Dr. Martin exemplifies how profoundly Auburn University cares about, invests in, and is transforming research to advance our society,” said Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Bill Hardgrave. “By inspiring future generations of scholars, Dr. Martin continues to make a difference in the lives of students, both at Auburn and around the world.”
To receive an SEC achievement award the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced in late April.
