Dr. J.N. Reddy Wins SEC Faculty Achievement Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dr. J.N. Reddy, Regents’ Professor in Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering, has been named winner of the 2020 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for Texas A&M University, the SEC announced Thursday, April 16.
A member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Dr. Reddy is known worldwide for his contributions to the field of applied mechanics through nearly 700 journal articles and widely used textbooks on the linear and nonlinear finite element analysis, variational methods, and composite materials and structures. He has presented papers and served as a visiting scholar for universities around the world, and Dr. Reddy is also a foreign fellow of the Indian, Canadian, Brazilian, Chinese and Spanish National Academies of Engineering. His recent honors include the Timoshenko Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Theodore von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers and the John von Neumann Medal from the U.S. Association of Computational Mechanics.
“Dr. Reddy is a legend in engineering education who has written 21 books – many of which have been adopted as textbooks – while also mentoring and advising students at all levels,” said Dr. Carol Fierke, Provost and Executive Vice President at Texas A&M University. “He is an exceptional engineer, and his research on shear deformation theories has resulted in both scientific advancement and technological utility. As an educator, engineer and servant, Dr. Reddy has touched generations of current students and future researchers.”
To receive an SEC achievement award the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced in late April.
