BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (June 30, 2021) – Dr. Joseph Glover, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Florida, will serve as Chair of the Southeastern Conference Provosts group, the SEC announced on Wednesday.

Glover has been provost at Florida since 2008 and is the second-ranking officer of the university, acting for the president in his absence. Among other duties, he supervises allocation of resources in academic areas, improvement of instruction, coordination of instructional activities, development and improvement of research activities and evaluation of university academic activity.

Arriving to UF in 1983 as an assistant professor in mathematics, Glover’s previous administrative responsibilities include serving as department chair in mathematics, interim dean of the college of liberal arts and sciences and associate provost for academic affairs.

“The provosts are a critical link between the SEC office and on-campus leaders from a variety of units, and the academic programs we facilitate flow through their offices,” said Dr. Torie A. Johnson, SEC Associate Commissioner for Academic Relations. “Our ability to support the academic mission of our 14 member universities is therefore tied to our provosts and the leadership provided by the chair. I look forward to working with Provost Glover in this role.”

The SEC Provosts are administrators of the SEC Academic Leadership Development Program, the SEC Faculty Achievement Awards, and the SEC Faculty Travel Program, among other Conference activities. The chair is responsible for leading group meetings and serving as a liaison between the SEC staff and the full provost group.

Glover’s term will begin on July 1 and aligns with the term University of Florida President Kent Fuchs is serving as vice president of the SEC. The SEC Provosts and SEC Presidents and Chancellors have historically sought continuity between the two positions.

The SEC Provosts are scheduled to continue monthly virtual meetings during the upcoming academic year, along with a planned in-person meeting at the University of Florida in the spring.
