BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dr. S. Jack Hu, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the University of Georgia, will serve as Chair of the Southeastern Conference Provosts group, the SEC announced on Wednesday.
Hu came to UGA in 2019 and oversees instruction, research, public service and outreach, and information technology. The vice presidents of these four areas report to him, as do the deans of UGA’s 17 schools and colleges and the campus dean of the Augusta University/UGA Medical Partnership. Additional areas reporting to Hu include but are not limited to diversity and inclusion, academic fiscal affairs, and faculty affairs. Before his appointment at the University of Georgia, Hu was Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan.
“The provosts are a critical link between the SEC office and on-campus leaders from a variety of units, and the academic programs we facilitate flow through their offices,” said Dr. Torie A. Johnson, SEC Associate Commissioner for Academic Relations. “Our ability to support the academic mission of our 14 member universities and tell our academic story is therefore tied to our provosts and the leadership provided by the chair. I look forward to working with Provost Hu in this role as we enhance our unique programming and messaging efforts.”
The SEC Provosts are administrators of the SEC Academic Leadership Development Program, the SEC Faculty Achievement Awards, and the SEC Faculty Travel Program, among other Conference activities. The chair is responsible for leading group meetings and serving as a liaison between the SEC staff and the full provost group.
Hu’s term began on June 1 and will align with the term University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead is serving as vice president of the SEC. The SEC Provosts and SEC Presidents and Chancellors have historically sought continuity between the two positions.
The SEC Provosts recently completed their annual June video conference and are scheduled to meet throughout the summer as needed and as previously scheduled in September and February.
