Hundreds of prospective students and parents, many with younger brothers and sisters in tow, turned out for the 2019 Spring SEC College Tour, recently held in Richmond and McLean, VA and Hunt Valley, MD.

For more than a decade the SEC College Tour has been a way for high school students and counselors in a region outside of the SEC’s geographic footprint to learn about SEC universities from experts in enrollment and admissions. And, this year’s events, planned by the University of Tennessee, were by all measures a success.

Consider that after being asked why she was taking a picture of her daughter in front of one particular school banner near the end of a university fair, one parent said, “We put together our strategy during dinner and ranked our favorites. Then we came in and discovered those weren’t for us, but now we have four new favorites. This could be the beginning of something special for her, and we want a photo to show where and how it all started.”

The SEC College Tour begins each spring with a nightly university fair in which the SEC conducts a free, two-hour event for students and their parents. It features short presentations and question and answer sessions with university representatives.

During the next morning’s breakfast meeting, SEC representatives offer more detailed institutional overviews to local school counselors. The highlight of the morning continues to be the SEC Roll Call where counselors are educated on SEC traditions and taught each university’s cheers and chants.

One counselor mentioned that from the outside, what most people know about the SEC are the rivalries and the competition, but it is great to see that inside, there is collaboration and camaraderie.

The SEC College Tour is one of several programs designed by the Southeastern Conference to showcase the range of accomplishments of SEC students, faculty and administrators. Dates and locations for the 2019-2020 SEC College Tour are to be announced.
