SEC Announces Dr. Bruce McCarl Wins 2022 Faculty Achievement Award for Texas A&M University

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Dr. Bruce McCarl, University Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Economics in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has been named winner of the 2022 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for Texas A&M University, the SEC announced on Tuesday.

Also a Regents Professor, Dr. McCarl’s researches national level agricultural sector appraisal of the economic consequences of environmental outcomes and policy actions, with particular focus on climate change effects, adaptation, and mitigation. He has long been a part of the United Nations sponsored International Panel on Climate Change, contributing to three assessments, and he was awarded a share of the Nobel Peace Prize. Dr. McCarl has been involved in more than $90 million in research projects, and his models have been adopted by USDA and USEPA. He has published numerous highly cited papers, including ones in Science, Nature, and Nature Climate Change. He has authored more than 300 journal articles, nine books, and 69 book chapters.

“Dr. McCarl is an internationally recognized applied economist and scholar who has made fundamental contributions in agricultural, climate change, and environmental economics, along with optimization modeling,” said Dr. Timothy P. Scott, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President at Texas A&M University. “He has bettered society and the state of the science on the economics of climate change, and through his many sustained contributions to research, policy, teaching, and mentoring, he is undoubtedly deserving of the SEC Faculty Achievement Award.”

To receive an SEC achievement award, the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced later this month.
