BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 22, 2021) – Dr. Catherine Roach, a New College Professor of Cultural and Gender Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named winner of the 2021 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for the University of Alabama, the SEC announced on Monday.
New College is an innovative liberal arts program of self-designed study where Dr. Roach teaches “Gender, Sexuality & Pop Culture” and “Writing Workshop” seminars. Her decades long career has focused on social justice around America’s changing norms of gender, sex, love and romance. She has written three academic books and two romance novels, both of which were informed by her research. Dr. Roach has won the Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award and two Fulbright Scholar honors, among other recognitions. She has held international visiting appointments in Canada (her home country), the United Kingdom and Greece.
“Dr. Roach is an outstanding scholar who has brought distinctive credit to the University of Alabama during her 22-year career,” said Dr. Jim Dalton, Executive Vice President and Provost at Alabama. “Her willingness to explore new research frontiers at the intersection of gender, racial and sexual justice, seek different reading audiences, and regularly create exciting and enticing courses demonstrates why she has been so successful creating a perennially vigorous research program and popular courses for our students.”
To receive an SEC achievement award the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced in April.
