BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (April 1, 2021) – Dr. Dipangkar Dutta, Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been named winner of the 2021 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for Mississippi State University, the SEC announced on Thursday.

Dr. Dutta has been a faculty member at Mississippi State since 2006 where he researches experimental nuclear and particle physics, with a focus on high precision measurements that probe the fundamental nature of quarks inside atomic nuclei. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, several of his results have been spotlighted as exceptional research by Physical Review Letters and Nature. Dr. Dutta is a native of India, and he is committed to increasing diversity in his field, using a bridge program he initiated in collaboration with local Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

“Dr. Dutta is an exemplary member of the physics faculty, and through his teaching and mentorship, particularly of undergraduate students, he continually demonstrates an unmatched commitment to the university and his discipline,” said Dr. David Shaw, Provost and Executive Vice President at Mississippi State University. “He teaches introductory and advanced courses, and his scholarship is acclaimed both nationally and internationally.”

To receive an SEC achievement award, the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced in April.
