SEC Announces Dr. Mona El-Sheikh Wins 2021 Faculty Achievement Award for Auburn University

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 24, 2021) – Dr. Mona El-Sheikh, Professor in Human Development and Family Science in the College of Human Sciences, has been named winner of the 2021 SEC Faculty Achievement Award for Auburn University, the SEC announced on Wednesday.
Since coming to Auburn in 1989, Dr. El-Sheikh has led a program of research focused on child and adolescent functioning in family and socioecological contexts. She has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation since 1996, and her extensive list of awards includes Auburn’s Creative Research and Scholarship Award and the Research Advisory Board Advancement of Research and Scholarship Award. She is also a fellow of the American Psychological Association.
“Dr. El-Sheikh has profoundly expanded our knowledge of childhood development and adolescence, and in doing so, personifies Auburn’s mission of discovery and innovation,” said Dr. Bill Hardgrave, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn. “With a remarkable body of research and continued commitment to student success, she embodies what it means to be an extraordinary teacher and scholar.”
To receive an SEC achievement award the faculty member must have achieved the rank of full professor; have a record of extraordinary teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level; and have a record of research that is recognized nationally and/or internationally. University winners will receive a $5,000 honorarium from the SEC and will become their campus nominee for the SEC Professor of the Year Award, which will be announced in April.
