The SEC Communicators Association (SECCA) was established in 2007 to enrich the professional development opportunities for campus communicators from SEC universities. The purpose of SECCA is to aid in the pursuit of communications goals and initiatives through collaboration, networking, sharing of best practices and professional development. With shared a region, scope, mission and challenges, SECCA recognizes that much can be learned from participants to benefit collective and individual communications goals among the 14 SEC universities.

University of Alabama - 2022+

  • SEC communicators once again met in-person at the University of Alabama for the 2022 meeting from June 13-15. Alabama softball Head Coach Patrick Murphy and SEC Network Lead Anchor Dari Nowkhah served as keynote speakers.

University of Alabama - 2021+

  • The University of Alabama organized and facilitated the 2021 SEC communicators meeting in a virtual format June 16-17. University of Tennessee Chancellor Dr. Donde Plowman and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey delivered keynote addresses. [The 2020 conference was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.]

University of Georgia - 2019+

  • The University of Georgia hosted the 2019 SEC communicators summer meeting June 9-11 in Athens, GA. Discussion and presentation topics included SEC It Just Means More messaging, social media best practices and editorial planning.

  • Mississippi State University hosted the 2018 SEC communicators summer meeting June 10-12 in Starkville, Ms. Discussion and presentation topics included branding, alumni magazines and social media.

  • The University of Missouri hosted the 2017 SEC Communicators Association Conference, June 11-13, in Columbia. Session topics included communication during unsanctioned events on campus, promoting diversity and inclusion, and analyzing trends in marketing.

University of Florida - 2016+

  • The 2016 SECCA Conference took place June 12-14 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Session topics included crisis communication, race relations, working with campus police and the relationship between academic and athletic brands. Attendees also previewed the SEC’s “It Just Means More.” image enhancement campaign scheduled to launch later that fall.

Auburn University - 2015+

  • The 2015 SECCA Conference was held June 14-16 at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala. Attendees were welcomed by former President Jay Gogue and Athletics Director Jay Jacobs. Session topics included sexual assault on campus, promoting messages through video, major institutional events and creative solutions with digital publishing. Participants also received an update on the SEC Network.

University of South Carolina - 2014+

  • The University of South Carolina hosted the 2014 SECCA Conference, June 22-24, in Columbia. Participants were welcomed by then Provost Michael Amiridis and heard a keynote address from Frank Martin, head coach of the men’s basketball team. Topics included social media strategy, the launch of the SEC Network, telling the SEC’s academic story, NCAA compliance and crisis communication.

Texas A&M University - 2013+

  • The 2013 SECCA Conference was held at Texas A&M University, June 9-11, in College Station. The event’s overarching theme was the intersection of academics and athletics. Session topics included incorporating academics into the football gameday experience, managing crises and engaging high-profile coaches and student-athletes.

  • The 2012 SECCA Conference took place June 10-12 at the University of Tennessee. Attendees were welcomed by former Chancellor Jimmy Cheek. Session topics included social media, managing the academic reputation of the SEC, crisis management and communicating with students.

  • The 2011 SECCA Conference was held at the University of Mississippi, June 7-9. Discussion topics included building the SEC’s academic reputation, leveraging social media efforts and branding. Attendees also enjoyed touring the Ole Miss campus and dinner at Rowan Oak, the family home of William Faulkner.

University of Kentucky - 2010+

  • The 2010 SECCA Conference was held June 13-15 at the University of Kentucky. Session topics included the relationship between academics and athletics, enrollment collaboration and working with advertising agencies. Participants also talked about the organizational structure within university relations.

Vanderbilt University - 2009+

  • The 2009 SECCA Conference was hosted by Vanderbilt University, June 7-9, in Nashville. Discussion topics included telling the university’s story through video, social media, government relations and managing natural disasters. Participants also discussed speech writing for university leaders and the launch of SEC/ESPN 360.

University of Arkansas - 2008+

  • The first SECCA Conference was held June 8-10, 2008, at the University of Arkansas. Topics included dealing with natural disasters, branding, promoting the SEC Academic Consortium (now SECU), communicating diversity and scholarship, and new technology tools. The group also discussed communication during fundraising campaigns and the newly established SEC Communicators Association.
